Steering Committee News July 19, 2009 This past Tuesday night the joint St. Cecilia and St. Leo steering committee met again to plan for the future. As we go forward it becomes clearer what items we need to focus on. It was decided that the larger steering group would divide into three subcommittees to tackle various areas that will need to be addressed to bring the two parishes together. First of all there will be a Pastoral Committee which will concern itself with matters such as Religious Education, Stewardship, Ministry to the poor, communication, etc. The goal of this committee will be to cite the good work that is already being done in the two parishes and to plan to keep this happening as the parishes come together. The second committee will focus on finances, staffing and buildings. Its task will be to examine the financial status of both parishes and to project a sample budget of what a combined parish might look like. This will require taking a serious look at the staffing of a combined parish as well as other operating expenses. It will also require reexamining the status of the properties of both parishes with an eye to see what would be needed and what would work best for a combined parish as we go forward. The third committee will look at how St. Cecilia’s School would relate to a new, combined parish. One of the things that has emerged in our joint discussions is a desire to make Catholic education available for the children of a combined parish. This committee will need to address how the school can remain strong and viable while protecting a new parish from liability for rising costs and possible debts that could be incurred. By and large, the steering committee seems committed to making the process work and there is a great deal of enthusiasm. We will meet again in the small committees again in a couple of weeks and keep you informed.
